What I think of when I think of American Literature, is classic books. I imagine a lot of the books being uninteresting and poorly written, in my opinion, but to the rest of the world, they are shining stars.
I think of American literature also as being the mold for authors and gave an idea of how to write in the very early years of American Literature, if that makes any sense.
Books in American Literature seem to have a lot in common. They are about problems that were going on in the world when the books were written. Whether it be racism, sexism, war protests, or something a long those lines. The common denominator for a lot of American classics and American literature, seem to be problems going on in the world.
